Congratulations to the recent graduates of the Black Hawk College Veterinary Technology Program – they achieved a 100% pass rate for the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE®)!

“We know that 13 students in the May 2023 graduating class registered and sat for the exam. We heard from each one saying that they passed the test!” said Janet Johnson, director of the BHC Veterinary Technology Program.

“We are incredibly impressed with the work and dedication that these students put toward preparing for the exam,” Johnson said.

The three-hour exam is administered three times per year, and the most recent testing window was July 15-Aug. 15.

“By passing the VTNE®, the Class of 2023 will help ease the strain of the national shortage of credentialed veterinary technicians,” she said.

Johnson said all 13 students have jobs, and 62% of them stayed at the clinics where they completed their eight-week internships in Spring 2023.

The vet tech students and their instructors were honored by Dr. Jeremy Thomas, BHC president, at the Aug. 31 Board of Trustees meeting.

“We’re very proud of our Black Hawk students,” Dr. Thomas said. “Our faculty work hard to give students a high-quality education, and we are excited to celebrate their successes.”

The Black Hawk College Associate in Applied Science in Veterinary Technology is an 80-credit-hour program that prepares students to perform veterinary procedures under the supervision of a veterinarian.

The program is accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and is housed at the college’s East Campus. Classes are in the Veterinary Sciences Center and have a low student-to-faculty ratio.

BHC veterinary sciences programs are taught by veterinarians, certified veterinary technicians and specialists in the field. Students get hands-on experience working in the on-site animal ward with small and large animals as well as clinical experience through internships.

Applications are being accepted now for Fall 2024. Students are strongly encouraged to submit their application early as the selection process begins in January and is very competitive.
